Presented in Lapis Blue, our R107 500SL still looks incredible even some 38 years on. It’s no surprise that Mercedes-Benz ran production of these SL’s in different variants for some 17 years. Instantly recognisable, the 500SL turns heads, and for all the right reasons.
Costing more than £40,000 in the early 80’s (equivalent to more than £100,000 in today’s money) if you owned a 500SL in period, you were a somebody. Mercedes built their reputation for excellent build quality and sublime comfort and they really hit the mark here. The whopping 5.0 litre V8 up front easily consumes all the road you can present it with, whilst the smooth automatic gearbox and comfortable ‘boulevard-style’ leather/fabric seats made this the effortless cruiser we all adore.
You could forgive anyone for falling in love with this car, and that’s exactly the reason the previous owner kept it to themselves for almost 20 years. Now, quite simply, the time had come to move it on. With extensive service records and all relevant invoices present, it is a car which has been coveted, and has carried the owner on several memorable European trips.
You wouldn’t know the car has covered over 100,000 miles if not for the odometer, there are very few signs of wear, another testament of the care from its six owners and the quality that Mercedes provided in the first place. In fact, the only apology that needs to be made is for the cruise control lever having been damaged, and one very small tear in the soft-top side window.
Complete with the colour-matched hard-top in excellent condition, and benefitting from a recent clean MOT, handbooks, service records and two keys, this 500SL is ready to be loved and enjoyed for many years to come….
