Seamlessly blending the quality of engineering synonymous of Rolls-Royce with the sporting heritage of Bentley, the Derby era of Bentley’s from the 1930’s, with ours being no exception, had considerably more power than their Rolls-Royce siblings and benefitted from improved chassis development, all-synchromesh four-speed gearboxes and servo-assisted brakes.
Our car, believed originally commissioned by a C.E. Sharp in July 1935, is in one reference tool reputed to have originally carried a rare (one of only seven) streamlined, four-door, four-seat Park Ward body. (However, a second publication on Bentley Specials quotes factory build sheets, and these state that the body fitted was a Drophead Coupe with rear-mounted spare wheel). Whichever is true, the car you see today is a mid 1950’s derived Open Tourer body in lightweight form incorporating integrated running boards flowing into the front and rear contoured wings, which can comfortably accommodate four adults.
Our Bentley houses a small nearside entrance door to the cabin, P100 Lucas ‘King of the Road’ headlights and a rear-mounted spare wheel. Modest luggage space is available with hinged walnut inlaid lid and a brand-new mohair hood with fitted glass window has been fitted with exceptional care and craft. The interior features black leather seats which are pleasantly patinated and not the least bit shabby. The paintwork is in largely good order, not perfect, in two-tone dark blue over light blue and a lightly faded coachline. A front-mounted badge bar with sporting related insignias and obligatory Flying ‘B’ radiator mascot complete the rakish look….
Up front, the side-opening bonnet houses a potent 3669cc six-cylinder engine which appears to be in rude health, starting readily and quickly holding a strong idle. It’s a pushrod design engine with twin SU carburettors, increased compression, improved con rods and modified cam profiles. Further back, a freshly rebuilt rear axle is present with light modification to suit long-distance touring, a purpose for which we think this car is eminently suited.
In previous ownership this car has enjoyed multiple European road trips and we sincerely hope a future custodian adopts the ‘Bentley Boy’ spirit and does the same. Closer to home, events such as The Flying Scotsman are well within this car’s wheelhouse….
The V5C Logbook, which is present, records our Bentley in the Historic category and correctly quotes the body as a Tourer, hence it qualifies for worldwide export which we can help arrange. Viewings strongly encouraged and welcomed at our premises near York.
