Hong Kong’s inaugural classic car auction
The Hong Kong automotive scene is about to see its first classic car auction on 11th June 2016. Hosted by RL Neo Classics, this auction is the first-of-its-kind to be held in Asia and has drawn interest from auto enthusiasts across the region.
Classic car auctions have a long history in both Europe and North America where many collectors of fine automotive classics gather to admire and watch these rare collectibles change hands under the hammer. While the automotive community in Hong Kong is relatively small, many would be surprised to find that our tiny city is home to many hidden gems as many local collectors have stashed aside classics from as far back as the 60s, some of which were first registered in Hong Kong! It is about time that Hong Kong hosted its own classic car auction as many local collectors have been known to attend auctions in Europe and ship their dream cars all the way back here.
RL Neo Classics was inspired by Dr Richard Lee, founder of the Italian Motors and Auto Italia brands responsible for bringing in premium marques, Ferrari and Maserati. An avid auto enthusiast and passionate classic car collector, he believes this platform brings much needed value to the fast growing classic car community in the region.
Kenneth Wong, Project & Operations Director of RL Neo Classics tells us that this is the first of many auctions to come and he hopes to raise the profile and awareness of our budding classic car community.
The 11th June event will feature over 25 classic vehicles ranging from top european marques such as Ferrari and Porsche, to rare Japanese collectibles such as the Honda NSX-R. The headliner is a 1980 Ferrari BB512 which is valued at ~HKD4million. Only 929 were ever made and this particular example is in pristine condition and first registered in Hong Kong.
Vehicles featured in this auction start from HKD300,000 with many falling within the ‘affordable’ range of under HKD1million. Our personal favourite must be the 1981 Ferrari GTB, the poster child of many 70s and 80s ‘kids’ who can now finally afford their childhood dream.
Kenneth expects a good turnout at the event with overseas guests arriving from China, Singapore, Malaysia and Australia just to name a few. Regardless of how many vehicles get sold, this promises to be a spectacular party and the first of many to come. You wouldn’t want to miss this.
